When Liam got his scooter, he had just turned four. It was actually his first scooter ever, so we weren’t sure if he would like it or if it would end up sitting in a corner after a week like some other toys. I still remember him standing by the door asking every five minutes, “Can we go outside now?” He was so excited to try it. The first day was mostly us walking behind him and reminding him to slow down. He kept getting off, getting back on, and trying again.

A few days later, something just clicked. Suddenly he was riding up and down the sidewalk like he’d been doing it forever. Now it’s been about four months, and honestly, the excitement still hasn’t gone away. Most mornings, if we’re going somewhere, he asks if he can take his scooter. One thing I really appreciate is how sturdy and easy to use the scooter has been. Liam picked it up very quickly, and it has handled daily use really well. We take it to the park, on walks around the neighborhood, and sometimes even on family outings. It has become one of those items that gets used almost every day rather than being forgotten after the initial excitement wears off.
One funny thing is that his little brother Ezra is completely convinced he needs a scooter too. He’s not even two yet, but he follows Liam everywhere. If Liam leaves the scooter for a second, Ezra runs over and climbs on it. Half the time he’s not even riding it—he just wants whatever his big brother has. As a parent, I think that’s been my favorite part. Not even the scooter itself, but watching the boys together. Liam loves showing Ezra what he can do, and Ezra thinks everything Liam does is amazing. We spend a lot of afternoons outside, and the scooter has become part of our routine. Sometimes Liam rides while I push Ezra in the stroller. Sometimes both boys are running around while I stand there with my coffee wondering how they still have so much energy.
It has definitely become one of Liam’s favorite outdoor activities, and I can see us getting a lot more use out of it in the months ahead.
